Have been named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.

Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Competition

The Reading Test, Writing and Language Test, and Math Test scores reflect the scores shown on each student’s PSAT/NMSQT© Score Report multiplied by two. The Selection Index is the sum of the doubled scores.

Students entered the National Merit Scholarship Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC@), by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQTO) last October. In identified the 50,000 highest scorers and notified their high schools. Some 16,000 of those high performers were recently designated Semifinalists on a state representational basis. Their schools were notified a few weeks ago and NMSC released their names to news media on September 14. Only Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the Merit Scholarship@ competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a number of additional requirements.

On Wednesday October 12th sophomores will be given the opportunity to take the PSAT at no personal cost. We strongly encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity.  Students will gain valuable test taking experience and feedback from taking this standardized test.

In addition, juniors may register to the take the exam at a cost of $21.00. We recommend the exam as students use the PSAT to seek consideration for the National Merit Scholarship as well as prepare for the upcoming SAT. 

Registration:

  • Begins: September 12th

  • Refund Date: September 30th

  • Sophomores-Free (must still register)
  • Juniors-$21.00

To register all Sophomores and Juniors that are interested in taking the PSAT must log into our online payment vendor Total Registration and completely fill out the registration form.

FAQ for the PSAT

What time is the PSAT?

The PSAT takes 2 hours and 45 minutes with breaks. We hope to start between 8:30 and 9:00 and end by noon.

Is the test taken on paper or on a computer?

The test is taken on paper, using a #2 pencil, and a fill-in the bubble format.

What if my child has special accommodations?

We can accommodate students that need extra time, a quieter space, or a large print format.

The registration site is asking for an SSD number. How do I get one?

We have adjusted the website so you no longer have to give an SSD number.

Do sophomores have to put down credit card information?

The way the website is set up, you need to choose that you will pay by card, but you do not have to enter any card information

AHS Open House – also 9th Grade Parent Orientation, Sept. 15, 5:30 – 8:30

Dear AHS Families,

This is a reminder and instructions for two upcoming events:

  • Grade 9 Parent/Guardian Orientation – AHS Auditorium – September 15, 5:30-6:30 pm. The high school administration will present important information on the transition for students to their first year of high school. This is also a useful orientation for new AHS families.
  • Open House – September 15, 6:30-8:30 pm. This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to come to the school to hear from their student’s teachers about the plans for their courses.  If you have specific questions for a teacher, we recommend that you contact the teacher separately. Conferences will be in November for short individual meetings.

Please remember to bring your student’s schedule so that you can know where to go. We will have folks there to assist, but it’s easier to be prepared. Please follow the Monday schedule (Tuesday for C block).
