To the MTA Human Relations Committee,
I am pleased to write this letter of support for the Arlington High School (AHS) Asian American Coalition for the Kathleen Roberts Creative Leadership Award. This club is relatively young, but they have already had a significant impact on promoting the cause of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our school community.
Arlington High School Asian American Coalition seeks to spread awareness about issues that impact the Asian American and Pacfic Islander community, to combat racism and cultural prejudice, and to provide a safe space for Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) students. The students in this club and their advisor, Sein Park, have created an active affinity group that provides a place for the AAPI community at AHS to assemble, to raise visibility and awareness of their experiences, and to work with other groups to promote an inclusive and positive environment.
In just one year, they have run advisory activities at the high school, middle school, and elementary schools. They have collaborated with other school groups to focus on the intersectionality of bias and hate including our Young Feminist Alliance and our Anti-racism Working Group. Just last weekend, the group led a community rally and workshop on anti-AAPI bias that brought in a wide group of teachers, students, police, and community members. We all gathered in circles in a town park and the group facilitated conversations that helped build awareness and commitments to supporting our AAPI community.
I am extremely proud of and impressed with the work of this group and I hope that you will strongly consider them for this award.
Sincerely,
Matthew Janger

Since 1983, MTA’s Human Relations Committee has reviewed nominations and selected the recipients of the annual Human and Civil Rights Awards. The annual HCR Awards Ceremony, attended by educators from across the state, honors those who have shown extraordinary dedication to civil rights and human relations. Honoring those who dedicate themselves to equality for all is a proud tradition of the MTA.  Often student groups are honored as well.  Information about the program and past winners can be found here: https://massteacher.org/opportunities-grants-awards/mta-human-and-civil-rights-awards

AHS Student wins the Hometown Media Award – Congratulations Daniel Gorbunov

We are excited to tell you that AHS student, Daniel Gorbunov recently won a national award for the video production he created for the APS K-12 Visual
Art Department called “Students Reflect” during the school closures last spring. During the closure, all K-12 art teachers collected artwork that hundreds of students had created at home in response to this common prompt:

“We invite every student to submit a visual artwork in any medium that reflects on these past ten weeks of your life.”

Daniel combined hundreds of images, students’ and teachers’ voices, and music into a powerful video that captures the experiences of students during that challenging time period. ACMI submitted his wonderful video to the national Hometown Media Awards, and Daniel won first place in the Mixed and Transmedia category. Daniel will be honored during the virtual Hometown Media Awards ceremony on June 30th.

Thanks to ACMI for their support of Daniel during and after the production of this ambitious project, to all of the K-12 art teachers in Arlington. A shout out to art teacher Polly Ford who worked with Daniel during the production. And congratulations, Daniel!
Best,
Dave

Welcome Willy – The AHS Therapy Dog!

AHS is excited to share that Social Worker Andrea Razi, LICSW, will have her certified therapy dog Willy at AHS this spring and moving forward, available to interested students, classes, teachers and the entire community during free periods on certain days.  Please reach out to Andrea with any questions at arazi@arlington.k12.ma.us.

This note comes to introduce Willy, so you are not surprised if you see him around.  Early in last school year, Andrea was awarded an Innovations in Education Grant from the Arlington Education Foundation ro train my dog to become a therapy dog for students and staff here at AHS. A special thanks to the AEF for funding this special project!
During the pandemic, Andrea and her family worked hard in training and preparing our dog for working with the AHS community.  In January of this year, Willy became certified.   He is still a puppy under 2 years old so he’s learning the ropes but he’s friendly and cuddly, and doing great here on the job so far.  He will meet with students who set up appointments and be available during lunch and some class periods.  This spring he’ll come to the courtyard during all the lunches a few times as well. It’s not all ironed out yet by way of plans, but we hope to see you around!
Below you will find a bit more information about Willy if you care to take a closer look.
Happy first week with everyone back!

Welcome Seniors!

It was truly an historic and joyful occasion to welcome the seniors back to school today after more than a year of distancing. The music, bubbles, balloons and signs assembled by our family volunteers helped to convey our excitement. Thanks to everyone for all the work and patience that made today possible. We look forward to a strong, safe, finish to the year!
